These beautiful and practical little cups we drink from almost daily, are made in mug factories. At Fenn, we make all sorts of mugs to suit all styles and every special occasion. But you are probably wondering what happens inside the factory of our mugs, and how we produce these amazing cups!
There is an art to making mugs, it takes some serious skill and tons of practice. Mugs can be formed from a few materials, such as ceramic mugs, porcelain mugs, and glass mugs. We mainly utilise ceramic and porcelain because they are durable and malleable making them quite useful for aesthetic forms in Fenn.
When we have the correct consistency, we begin moulding the clay into mugs. It can be done manually or in automatic machines. We have some mugs which are ordinary and basic, while others can be very decorative with intricate designs on them. Some of our mugs are also hand-painted! This is not an easy hand-painting and requires a steady hand with an eagle eye to ensure that everything appears perfect.
After we mold the mugs and paint them on, we leave them to bake in a kiln — basically, an oversized oven that gets super-hot. This crucial step makes these mugs durable and capable of holding hot drinks without breaking. The clay turns and hardens because of the heat, so these mugs are going to stick around for a long time.
Mugs are made by first dumping all the raw materials into a large mixer. This is the machine that combines it all ruthlessly. The first step is to mix the materials and then we use a press to form the mugs in a specific mold. After they are molded, the mugs are sent to a kilm for their heating process to ensure they are stable and lasting.
When the mugs make it out of the kiln we glaze them. The Glaze is an important step since it makes the mugs shiny and helps to waterproof them. That will make them completely leakproof when drinking from them! Finally, A printing machine is used to print designs, logos or any special message on the mugs. We check each mug before we dispatch them to our customers so that their quality meets our high standards.
As an example, we have created a unique type of glaze that gives our tat mugs extra strength whilst also bringing out colour and texture! Our mugs with this glaze are fabulous and completely functional to be filled with hot beverages. Even our printing machines that allow your logos and graphics to be printed from the most superb clarity and precision giving an edge for the mug against others.
